Cloud Cost Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Cloud Cost (FinOps) Engineer to join our team, which develops cloud-based high performance computing (HPC) platforms supporting life sciences research and development. Time zone: work alongside PST/PDT daytime hours.

Quantori is an international team: we have colleagues who work not only from office but also remotely from all over the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement the collection and analysis of operational and financial data from AWS cloud services.
  • Design and implement robust cloud cost management tools and near real-time dashboards using platforms such as Grafana and Kibana, which will include regular reporting of financial summary information to stakeholders.
  • Develop automated solutions and scripts to enhance the efficiency of cloud cost monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with project teams and departments to ensure transparent chargeback and showback models for cloud costs.
  • Collaborate with FinOps analysts to continuously monitor service usage and spending to identify trends and cost-saving opportunities, enable rapid response to unexpected cost events, and provide forecasts.
  • Work with platform teams to implement cost-saving opportunities, such as increased use of EC2 Reserved Instances, EC2 Spot Instances, or alternative silicon opportunities.

What we expect:

  • Proven experience in AWS platforms, with a deep understanding of relevant features, including defining and managing tagging strategies.
  • Prior expertise with cloud cost management tools and data sources related to cloud usage, such as AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Storage Lens, and IBM Cloudability.
  • Strong software engineering background with proficiency in a high-level programming language such as Python.
  • Experience creating and managing dashboards using reporting platforms such as Grafana and Elastic Stack/ELK.
  • Experience in automation and integrating various data sources and systems, using common patterns such as ETL/ELT.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to process complex datasets and translate them into actionable insights.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, capable of working effectively across different teams.
  • 5+ years working in engineering, solution architecture, or DevOps, with a track record of successfully delivering complex projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, as well as independently when required.

Nice to have:

  • Basic understanding of Unix concepts and Linux environments.
  • Basic understanding of high-performance computing (HPC) concepts and environments.
